{"id":12996,"date":"2022-03-14T10:31:08","date_gmt":"2022-03-13T23:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ee.yelkdev.site.au\/?p=10909"},"modified":"2024-12-10T03:29:01","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T03:29:01","slug":"3-key-insights-to-future-proof-your-application-strategy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.equalexperts.com\/blog\/our-thinking\/3-key-insights-to-future-proof-your-application-strategy\/","title":{"rendered":"3 key insights to future proof your application strategy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In February, Equal Experts was invited to facilitate a panel discussion at Forefront Events\u2019 Application Strategy Summit in Victoria.<\/p>\n<p>Joined by a reputable panel of tech leaders from some of Australia\u2019s largest brands and organisations, the program covered everything from development and integration to culture and accelerating productivity.<\/p>\n<p>As part of a session on \u2018aligning developer culture with process improvement\u2019, I conducted a discussion panel with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/craigbbaker\/?originalSubdomain=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Craig Baker<\/a>, Senior Director of Engineering from AfterPay, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kevin-love-it\/?originalSubdomain=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kevin Love<\/a> former General Manager of Product Technology at Kmart, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/aaronchipper\/?originalSubdomain=au\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aaron Chipper<\/a>, Chief Technology Officer and founder of FrankieOne.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of my key takeaways from the conversations.<\/p>\n<h2>1. There\u2019s a strong connection between learning and development cultures.<\/h2>\n<p>Culture is critical. In his research and writings, American sociologist Ron Westrum explores the topology of organisational cultures. He draws a simple but compelling conclusion; stronger culture results in higher levels of trust, collaboration, and higher quality decision making.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, it\u2019s worth acknowledging an additional piece of the puzzle. In order to foster high-performing teams\u2014and cultivate strong developer culture\u2014we need to establish an environment where:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teams continuously create insights.<\/li>\n<li>Teams continuously implement improvements based on those insights.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In my experience, the most powerful cultures in development teams are two-tier. By coupling an overarching \u2018learning culture\u2019 (based on creating insights, making improvements, and continuously honing practice) with a culture of personal development (encouraging team members to build skillsets and increase their value to, and function within, the team) we create an ever-increasing spiral of high performance.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Cultures are mutable, making it all the more important to nurture them.<\/h2>\n<p>In any team or organisation, everyone is partly responsible for ensuring a healthy culture. A good culture is maintained, nurtured and curated \u2013 it doesn\u2019t just happen. That said, leaders will always play an important role in creating and contributing to the direction of any culture.<\/p>\n<p>Always remember that cultures are mutable\u2014they\u2019re malleable, ever-evolving, and very rarely a \u2018set-and-forget\u2019 proposition. You see examples of this when an Executive leaves an organisation and they\u2019re replaced by a new Executive, often with a new cultural agenda or preferences for different ways of working and interacting as a team. In these instances, values play a crucial role in maintaining continuity for the culture of an organisation.<\/p>\n<p>Culture is a constant consideration. The actions you take\u2014and the processes and rituals that help define your actions\u2014play a critical role in defining and maintaining developer culture.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13106 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.equalexperts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/application-strategy-summit-wrap-up-1200x528-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.equalexperts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/application-strategy-summit-wrap-up-1200x528-1-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.equalexperts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/application-strategy-summit-wrap-up-1200x528-1-1-300x132.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.equalexperts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/application-strategy-summit-wrap-up-1200x528-1-1-768x338.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2>3.\u00a0Process improvement is an ongoing proposition, and it looks different in every organisation.<\/h2>\n<p>The most successful organisations strive for a culture of sustained innovation. They constantly look to improve, to reach higher levels of performance. While this is a universal truth, the way you reach these higher levels will change depending on your team, culture, sector, and a range of other factors.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no one-size-fits-all pathway. Each of the panelists offered a range of strategies to trial and implement, depending on your team culture. These included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensuring the team has ownership of projects, and encouraging them to solve problems as a team unit<\/li>\n<li>Providing mentors to team members, to ensure they have access to guidance and support<\/li>\n<li>Encouraging the seeking of advice from peers and management to remove the obstacles that come with hierarchy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As an aside, one of the most compelling, insightful books I have read about enabling autonomy\u2014and developing processes to safeguard and maintain that autonomy within an organisation\u2014is called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reinventingorganizations.com\/\">Reinventing Organisations by Frederic Laloux<\/a>.
