{"id":21140,"date":"2025-03-21T14:13:17","date_gmt":"2025-03-21T14:13:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.equalexperts.com\/?p=21140"},"modified":"2025-03-31T02:05:40","modified_gmt":"2025-03-31T01:05:40","slug":"ai-enabled-delivery-according-to-50-tech-leaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.equalexperts.com\/blog\/data-ai\/ai-enabled-delivery-according-to-50-tech-leaders\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cMy CEO keeps coming and asking me how we are using AI in the SDLC!\u201d \u2013 AI Enabled Delivery According to 50+ Tech Leaders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over the last 10 days, I\u2019ve attended four different events: <a href=\"https:\/\/conference.ctocraft.com\/london-2025\/\">Ctocraft London 2025<\/a> (the only one not explicitly focused on AI, yet AI dominated the corridor conversations), our own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.equalexperts.com\/blog\/events\/ai-and-software-development-transforming-innovation-and-business-value\/\">Expert Talks<\/a> (kindly hosted by Disney), and two private gatherings for the Equal Experts Customer Network (one in Manchester and one in Amsterdam). In total, I spoke with more than 50 technology leaders, each at different stages of trying to adopt AI within their software delivery processes.<\/p>\n<h2>What We\u2019re Hearing from Tech Leaders<\/h2>\n<p>Here are a few standout quotes, which reflect the spectrum of challenges and excitement around AI:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cEverything is moving so fast I constantly feel as though I\u2019m falling further behind.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWe are trying to get access for our developers but there is a 3-month governance process to get new tools approved.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMy CEO keeps coming and asking me how we are using AI in the SDLC!\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI\u2019m using AI, and I know exactly what LLMs can and can\u2019t do. It hasn\u2019t really changed that much.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I think there are three lessons that are worth taking from the opinions I\u2019ve heard:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Everyone feels behind \u2013 You\u2019re not alone in this, and it\u2019s not too late to take action &#8211; but as a leader you do need to ensure that bureaucracy doesn&#8217;t hamper (safe) experimentation.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Beware false ceilings \u2013 Some teams and individuals say they\u2019ve reached the limits of current AI tools, but often they\u2019ve just reached the limits of their process for using these tools effectively.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Identify the value AI brings \u2013 It\u2019s easy to start playing with models and tools, or just to be \u201cseen doing something\u201d, but as with any tool it\u2019s only as good as the task you give it (avoid the \u201cgolden hammer\u201d!).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>A Quick Note on Staged Adoption<\/h2>\n<p>At a couple of these events, we shared a simple \u201cstaged adoption\u201d model for AI Enabled Delivery\u2014from small, bottom-up experimentation to full-blown organisational transformation. Lots of people found it useful for clarifying where they are and where they\u2019d like to be.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-21142 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.equalexperts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Screenshot-2025-03-21-at-12.14.57-1200x495.png\" alt=\"Staged adoption for AI Enabled Delivery. Phase 2 - Accelerated Initiatives (top down) New initiatives, focused on a faster route to value. Different shaped people in different shaped teams. Paradigm: Value delivery opportunities. Phase 3 - AI Organisations (All change) Tuning an organisation to best support many\/all accelerated initiatives. New topologies, different enablement strategies, changes in how work is prioritised\/routed. Paradigm: Transformation.\" width=\"1200\" height=\"495\" \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"><br \/>\nTo find out more about that approach, see: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/parkerphil_ai-ed-from-faster-horses-to-motor-cars-activity-7303099533947793410-8NBk\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAACWsSIB8fk7pwSAnR0kz6-_T6VvaRxYxrQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">AI ED: From \u201cFaster Horses\u201d to \u201cMotor Cars\u201d\u2026<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Three Actions to Take Now<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Based on what we\u2019ve seen and heard, we suggest these three practical actions that can help you cut through the noise and make real progress:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organise communities around learning<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Instead of everyone rushing to experiment in the same narrow area (often coding), encourage a variety of experiments across the whole software delivery lifecycle.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Use the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Theory of Constraints<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> lens to identify your biggest bottlenecks\u2014be it analysis, design, quality, or operability\u2014and focus AI experiments there (different teams may have different bottlenecks).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Make sure teams share their learnings widely. Collaboration and open knowledge exchange are critical for AI to have an impact across your organisation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Run a single accelerated initiative experiment<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Pick a well-defined, \u201caccelerated\u201d project (possibly greenfield) where you can truly test AI\u2019s potential end-to-end.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-stringify-indent=\"0\" data-stringify-border=\"1\">Work with people that have done this before, so you don\u2019t end up going quickly, but in the wrong direction!<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Use this initiative to uncover friction points in governance, security, and approvals\u2014then remove those blockers before scaling AI to other projects.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Resist the urge to simply layer AI on top of an existing cross-functional team that\u2019s already maxed out delivering business as usual.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create your own AI Enabled Delivery playbook<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Document the best practices and lessons learned as you go. Don\u2019t wait until \u201cwe have it all figured out.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">A great example to reference is the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/defra.github.io\/defra-ai-sdlc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">DEFRA AI SDLC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\"> (published under the Crown Commercial Licence). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/tim-howard-b2127614b\/\">Tim Howard\u2019s<\/a> blog post,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/genai-software-development-new-paradigm-tim-howard-pw1be\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">GenAI &amp; Software Development \u2013 A New Paradigm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">, introduced this to the world and explains its genesis.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 300;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">Your internal playbook should be a living guide that demystifies AI for everyone from new hires to senior leadership, ensuring consistency and reducing duplication of effort.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Final Thoughts<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 300;\">It\u2019s natural to feel like you\u2019re lagging behind\u2014especially when so much AI news is making headlines daily. But remember, most organisations are still finding their feet.
